FAKs: Frequently Asked Kuestions

Who the FAK are you?

Please refer to our 'Raison d'être' page for specific details about who and what we are and are not. Briefly, we'll remind you that we are not affiliated with any political party or organisation and have no agenda other than sharing instances of people, places, and things that make us exclaim: WHAT THE FAK!

Pericles and Antigone aren't our real names. We've borrowed them from Ancient Greek History / Literature and a simple google search will render more details on those names. We thought it appropriate to adopt Greek names since the ancient Greeks are mostly widely known for, um, thinking and we suspect were probably the first to utter: WHAT THE FAK but in ancient Greek when they were sitting around thinking about how something was very 'faked' up in their society and how someone had to do something about it. There was no television at that time; therefore people had nothing else to do but think for amusement and to solve problems: imagine that! Like the ancient Greeks, we think for fun because we cannot help ourselves. We do not follow American Idol or Desperate Housewives so are left to think. We also think much of what we observe in our daily lives is very 'faked' up and felt it was time to say something about it. We suspect there are others out there who think along the same lines as we do - at least another 2-5 people globally perhaps.

So, I am (Pericles) a crazy scientist who works for a respectable company: That is until they kick me out although I will never write about my day job. It's too specialised for you and at the end of the day why the FAK do you want to be so nosy? If you are impressed with my writing (which I doubt) spread the word of our site instead. I created this site because it is fun to play with Drupal and because I like writing about important issues. I see things and I get annoyed. I see people suffering every day because of politics, corporations, wars, religions. I am sick and tired of what is happening. I feel like shouting WHAT THE FAAAAK? Are people blind? Don't they see what is going on in the world? I am fed up seeing people bent over backwards and not aware how badly they're being faked.

Several times I try to explain to people what I see. The response I get is simply FAKING pathetic: "What can I do? Simple civilians are powerless in front of 'them'. I just want to have a quiet life." Well, you can have a quiet life but do not complain when 'they' are faking you up big time. People are powerful and governments know it. That is why 'they' want you to think the opposite. Go and vote and protest (non-violently, of course; we do not condone violence).

Finally, I would like to clarify that I am not a racist. I do not hate the Americans or Chinese or anybody else that I am picking on. On the contrary, I have great respect for those countries, THAT IS why I get so upset. For instance, I enjoy the Chinese movies, from the brainless martial arts ones to the masterpieces like the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." However I get very upset seeing the world's dependency on a single country and the non-democratic regime of China, even if it is not that dissimilar to the US' (something about Capital Punishment and fear, perhaps?).

Enough about me. A little about Antigone now:

Now freelance writer Antigone found herself saying 'what the fak' entirely too often at work in newsrooms especially over the commercialization - hence degradation - of media. This was NOT the way she envisioned journalism when she chose this career path. Where was the die-hard drive to expose the truth with no holds barred regardless of consequence, regardless of anything because there was nothing, could be nothing more important or dignified than making the public aware of the truth? This, after all, was the journalist's duty: the journalist saw something that made him/her say 'what the fak' and then it was imperative to go off to find out 'what the fak' was going on before sharing it with the public who had a right to know what the fak was going on. At least this was her understanding of the definition of journalism: to protect democracy as a sort of watchdog who reported the truth through a series of standard journalistic ethics and principles. She looked around but didn't see much of this except in Hollywood films. Where were these ideals? Crushed by the co-mingling of big business with media - that's where!

Check ownership of your local newspaper or tv station. It's probably owned by some mega media giant that also owns 100 other newspapers, tv/radio stations, and maybe even a few 7-11s. Those running the media circus aren't worried about reporting the truth but rather keeping advertisers happy so they'll continue to spend money advertising. Most avoid hard news anyway and instead cater to the broadening base of idiots multiplying like fleas across America. They don't want to hear about Russian politics but prefer to hear about Brittany 's latest train wreck along the pothole-laden road of her once trailer trash, always trailer trash proof of life - if you can call it that. The average person in the U.S. so blind, so ignorant they don't suspect that the fluff that comes out of that ex-Playboy bunny turned news anchor's mouth is about as fake as her breasts and heavily painted face all part of the product packaged as a dolphin tease to viewers who'd otherwise just watch porn 24/7 if the kids weren't around.

Most media in the US today is nothing more than big business protecting big business and the government that gives them free reign to profit as much as corporately possible. Antigone assessed corporate media's goal is to hide the truth not expose it because they'd be exposing themselves for the fraud they are. They're not working for the public good but rather for the propaganda bitch of corporations and government for which we can safely call: the SAME.

Therefore, Antigone knew she had to get out of that game because unlike most players, she could not be bought or told what to think for merely a paycheck. She tired of doing battle with sales people who feared loss of advertising dollars when negative stories about key advertisers appeared in print. Editorial bribery via advertising didn't sit well with her and she knew she'd either have to play their game or be fired for doing her job so one day decided to thumb her nose at the establishment that sickened her and go indie/freelance which in her mind is synonymous with sanity and dignity she couldn't find in mainstream media.

When Pericles suggested they blog together to share all of the things they see wrong with the world, all of the things that make them say 'what the fak' to themselves and to each other, she jumped on it. Thanks to the freedom of blogging, finally she could freely voice her opinions and analysis on topics of her choosing, not that of some editor pressured by some corporate fakhead number cruncher who would ring and bitch or threaten jobs should a story be written about a specific topic or person/company because they were off limits. Where the fak were we living? China? What the fak do you mean: off limits? This was not a concept Antigone would accept so said:

FAK mainstream media, FAK restriction, FAK rules, FAK pretending lies aren't lies just because someone is paying you to. FAK the manipulative bastards taking shelter under the umbrella of 'corporate America' and this government who makes sleazy slimy love to them on a very soft, comfy bed in which they can lie together - in both meanings of the word - and FAK the hell out of the innocent and ignorant simply because they control the voice through which most people get their information.

Control of the media is a mighty powerful thing. That's why people like us are taking it back from the faks in power and will do our best to share our thoughts when we come upon something that doesn't seem right. We'll ask questions, we'll draw conclusions, we'll piss some people off which usually means we're onto something but we hope to make you think more than anything else. We hope to make you care about the world around you and realize that things aren't what they seem more often than not but you can't see them if you live in the dark and the faks in control want you to live in the dark so they can maintain control and continue faking you. Most of you are being faked without even knowing it. You know something isn't right but everyone's saying it's all good; it's all ok. The economy is strong W says; we're making progress in Iraq. Does the economy feel strong? Does it look like Iraq is coming together? Does anyone realize the most powerful thing one can say in a democracy is: WHAT THE FAK! The sooner more of us learn to say WHAT THE FAK and mean it, the sooner the world may become a better place for all.

What the FAK do you expect from such a site?

What do you think we expect? Not to get rich, of course, although Antigone is a freelance writer / journalist and she would not mind a job with a respectable media company like AP or Reuters. I do not think she would ever go for Cosmetic News Network or F-aking OX-y-moron News. You see, "Shock and Awe" type of journalism is not her cup of tea. Instead she prefers to address subjects that are more of the "Shocking and Awful" type.

What we expect is simple: We do this for fun to enjoy ourselves and don't mind if we also manage to make you laugh and think about current affairs. If we accomplish that much, then we have succeeded. It's that simple.

What the FAK is the WhattheFAK-o-meter score?

The WhattheFAK-o-meter score is not an internal voting for our articles, per se. That is up to our readers. It's a scoring system reflecting our disgust about the story. I am not being very clear, am I?

A score of 1 is something that'd make us stop in our tracks to ponder what the fak we just heard upon hearing it whereas a score of 8-10 indicates the subject matter really tees us off to the degree of literally finding ourselves exclaiming: WHAT THE FAK! These usually involve government corruption especially when it comes to our ole pal W, corporate abuse of the system for profit at the expense of people's safety/health, mostly anything involving some of our favorite nations like Saudi Arabia and China where everything's faked-up to a certain degree, some faking nonsense peddled in the name of religion. You name it. We're often surprised by daily news and sometimes wonder if the stories are fictional because we cannot believe such nonsense to be true to life but then there is truth in the old saying that life is much more bizarre than fiction ever could be.

Who the Fak are the quotes' authors like 'The Scientist'?

The Scientist

20-something clueless college graduate with a science degree but less common sense and scientific drive than the average garden hose. The scientist believes she’s ‘in the know’ simply because she graduated from college. She won’t exert the effort to think past her own nose because she already knows everything and cannot comprehend why there are some crazy people in the world who question what they’re told. Prime target and dream audience for government propagandists and corporate marketers. Fears everything; thinks about nothing. Not the least bit inquisitive and overall mentally and physically lazy.

Truly the antithesis of a scientific mind, the ‘scientist’ spouts complete nonsense defiant of truth or science which only makes her boasting of being a scientist all the more amusing for those who know better.

Examples: When the backwards-thinking scientist says she wants ‘real sugar,’ she is referring to white, refined sugar that is a product of a chemical refinement process and refers to raw cane sugar as ‘fake or weird’ sugar. To the scientist, iodized, not sea salt is ‘real salt’ while ‘real’ paper and eggs are white, not brown.

Grandma

A universally stereotypical senior citizen with a rather misguided sense of reality. Concocts wild theories to explain anything she cannot understand. Typically ‘very’ busy doing nothing, Grandma delights in sharing nasty details of physical ailments as is common for geriatrics, will take the word of the girl at McDonalds as expert nutritional advice, and is forever referring to the mysterious, nondescript yet authoritative ‘they’ or ‘them.’ Most often heard as ‘They say(insert nonsense here).’ No one has successfully deduced the true identity of the mysterious ‘they’ – we’re afraid we’ll never know who ‘they’ are.

Grandma believes such things as: ‘newspapers never lie,’ ‘doctors are all-knowing b/c they’re doctors,’ and ‘it’s the same everywhere.’ Paying more than $10 for ANYTHING is too much, and everything is ‘still good’ even after it’s disintegrated. Never uses gifts because she deems them too good for her to use and stashes them away to regift at a later date. Therefore you may as well buy things you like because, odds are, they’ll be yours again someday.

Dad

Dad is the parental embodiment of what-the-fak: a no-nonsense father who believes in the principles of hard work, education, and common sense which he expects of everyone he encounters. He is definitely NOT politically correct and doesn’t accept whiny excuses in defense of stupidity. He believes stupid people need to be told they’re stupid if there’s any hope of improvement. Not solely negative, Dad equally acknowledges smart and good especially in those truly giving their all towards progress on the rare occasion he encounters these phenomena in today’s modern world where laziness and blatant stupidity thrive under the blanket protection of some BS-politically correct terminology.

Some of Dad’s beliefs include: ‘taking no for an answer is not acceptable,’ ‘you can if you try hard enough,’ and ‘most problems have solutions if you really want to find them.’ While usually diplomatically, Dad speaks his mind and feels most people simply need a jolt of reality to change for the better. He feels the biggest barrier between what is and what can be is the trend of hiding from the truth just because changing it might take a little work.
