When MySpace insults my intelligence

Pericles's picture

Perhaps, you have read my previous story on MySpace deleting its atheist and agnostic group together with 35,000 members. If not, it is available here. Anyway, I decided to send them an e-mail to complain about what happened:

With great sadness I was informed that the Atheist and Agnostic Group has been deleted from your site. I personally find it as a disgusting case of blunt discrimination against 35,000 members. Is this what your company is all about? Since when does your company give in to religious bigotry? I guess Freedom Of Speech is not part of your vocabulary.
I am not expected to receive a clear answer for this, but at least you should be aware that we won't be silent. It is the 2008th year of the New Era and we won't give in to your bigotry. Enough is enough.
Yours Sincerely,

[ name withheld ]

I was not expected them to answer but they did, so here it's their reply:

Hello,

Please send the link/URL of the group in question. The URL is the profile's web address. It is found after 'http://' towards the top of your browser, in the web address bar. The URL most likely looks like one of the following 'www.myspace.com/example' or ' http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=0000000&Mytoken=984C708D-

C554-1446-8130110631E7300053636285' or something similar.

Thank you,
MySpace.com

Is it me or did they try to insult my intelligence? It seems that the person who replied is not one of their brightest cookies. So, this is what I replied back:

Hello back,

Well if the group has been deleted how am I supposed to provide you with its URL? I presume you are not aware of this? http://www.secularstudents.org/node/1933

Kind Regards

Finally, after a few days they replied:

Hello, Your participation and feedback are highly valued.

So, shall I comment on that or not? I think, that perhaps it is the first time that stupidity and incompetence are so faking obvious that I need not comment on it. What do you think? Yours comments are welcomed.

Re:

I am with you on the issue. But I do not believe your action would result in anything. Unless they start getting thousands of letters of similar content and get scared of a lawsuit, they would continue ignoring the issue and insulting you with those cooked up responses.

It sounds like their

It sounds like their automated customer service will be getting you nowhere. I think that all we (those who are outraged) can do is make it as public as possible, hopefully embarrassing MySpace into some sort of reaction.

I doubt it

They did not care about all those members. I doubt they will care about the public. Let us not forget that MySpace belongs to Merdoch.

Oh yeah. How about spreading

Oh yeah.

How about spreading nasty rumors then? "MySpace eats babies."
There, I've done it. :)

First of all it's Murdoch.

First of all it's Murdoch. And when did all religious people suddenly become bigots? Still this is very unfair? What's next? Deleting the African-American groups?

Nobody said so

Nobody said that ALL religious people are bigots. Almost all my family and friends are religious and they do not seem fanatics to me, although I may be biased

However, religious bigots will use any means necessary, including violence, to spread their beliefs. This is what annoys me most. When they get 'insulted' by atheists, it is the atheist that take the blame. Guess what; I am significantly insulted by them and supernatural religions as well but I will support their right to believe in whatever god they see fit. My problem is with the existence of double standards.

As for Murdoch, let us not forget that he owns FOX News. Do I have to say more?
