But WE Can See YouTube, China

China’s latest repressive stunt: blocking YouTube ‘coincidentally’ after a video was posted of the Chinese security force beating the fak out of some Tibetan protesters during last year’s clashes prior to the start of the Olympics. For some reason, I’m still not over the fact China was allowed to host the Olympics but we all know why China was allowed to host the Olympics. What a show indeed especially when it came to China’s sorry-ass attempt to show the world how host-worthy(ie civilized and democratic) it’d become overnight even though it still wanted to block the world press from unrestrictive internet access. Ah, China, you big control freak!

I think my favorite Olympic-themed story (and I mean story in a very fictional sense) was about Freedom Park, the façade China created to make it appear as if it’d embraced some form of democratic free speech. All of sudden China welcomed anyone to freely speak his/her mind – sort of because such a ‘freedom’ involved a system of parameters guaranteed no freedom of speech would take place – at least not without an arrest to follow. Sure, come speak your mind but first you must apply for a permit AND have it approved although you’d have a better chance of winning the lottery. If you hit the jackpot and scored a permit, you then had to make damn sure you were within the proper freedom zone(areas China designated as free speech areas). WTF – how free is that? Oh and if you successfully achieve free speech, you’d probably be arrested for it anyway. That’s the thing about China: you just can’t trust it to hold up its end of the bargain. Nothing more than a horse and pony show while the eyes of the world were upon the fak. Even through the thick smog of the country’s notorious air pollution, we could clearly see there ain’t no such thing as a free anything in China except maybe a beating if you act out of line.

So, the blocking of YouTube ‘speculatively’ over this Tibetan beating video nothing new really: just China being China and trying to cover up more proof of its total disregard for humans rights. You can watch the heart-touching video here and think you’ll agree it definitely wouldn’t be mistaken for a PR video produced by China’s National Tourist Office.

China, as expected, claims it’s not hiding anything. It’s merely experiencing technical difficulties; something unplugged somewhere. Just an oversight or a bad wire; a technician’s been assigned to it and will have it back up and running just as soon as he/she finds the cure for cancer, solves world hunger and helps me finish building this 3-D puzzle I was crazy enough to think I could handle on my own. Why would China, of all places, want to hide anything? It’s definitely not as per the official story. That’s why journalists and tourists are banned from Tibet. China’s not hiding anything so it must be sure to limit access to conceal that which it’s not hiding in the first place. Don’t you understand? The People’s Republic of Transparency it is not.

According to the spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, China’s not afraid of the internet. No, I’m sure it’s not afraid of the internet but rather people using the internet FREELY. I’m not afraid of snakes per se; I’m afraid of their bites.

I often wonder if China realizes those of us in the West are onto the fact they’re not exactly a democracy and don’t treat people like human beings whether those people are citizens or not. At least they don’t discriminate, right? I find it humorous they even bother with these petty attempts to conceal their fak-ups because surely their own citizens are very aware of what’s going on within China’s borders even if they’re too scared to say anything about it. I can’t imagine the Chinese population living in the dark even if the government toils every waking hour to hide its bad behavior from its own citizens and the world. After all, China’s people are subjected to the oppression in their daily lives. How could they miss that?

I mean, for fak’s sake, this is the country that’s hired bloggers to troll the internet for ‘bad press’ and then respond by spewing more propaganda. The government goes out of its way to smack down access to anything it deems ‘inappropriate content’ online to contain the beast that is the truth. I agree with them that the content of such videos is inappropriate. Beating protesters IS inappropriate so I guess I do agree with China that it’s inappropriate content but I have a feeling they don’t define ‘inappropriate’ content as I do. For me, the beating is inappropriate as are its overall limitations on freedom. For China, what’s inappropriate is other people seeing proof of its brutality.  It’s like when a husband cheats on his wife and tells her he’s sorry. The old saying goes: “Are you sorry you cheated or sorry you got caught?” China’s sorry someone managed to record it and post it for the world to see. Here’s an idea: if you don’t want people viewing your ‘inappropriate content’ – STOP being inappropriate and no one will feel the need to record it and broadcast it to the world.

China fails to comprehend the attention it calls to itself when it pulls one of these repressive maneuvers. It may be able to easily control and censor what its citizens may have access to but those in the free world still have a front row view and get mighty faked off when we see freedom being denied yet again by this monster state. Doesn’t China realize it’d probably better contain these controversial materials IF it just let freedom reign in the virtual world? The censorship only stirs the world media into a frenzy: “HEY EVERYONE, look at what China’s not letting its people do now”. So, it just calls more attention to the oppressive regime and makes the rest of us hate the Chinese government more than we already do. We probably wouldn’t even have known about the video to such a great extent had China not decided to block You Tube in the first place. It may be able to pull the sweatshop wool over its own people’s eyes with censorship and overall control but sadly, for China, its reach isn’t far and wide enough to pull the plug for the rest of us. I’m sure that’d be China’s wet dream of all time as it’s now even pushing for a new global currency since it doesn’t like the lack of control it has in a market gauged by the flaky US dollar. At least in this case, the US and European Union have told it to fak off.

Imagine how scary the world could become if China's allowed to have more of its way than it already does. Now that would be a fakin nightmare.

What a lie indeed

Instead of fixing the root of the problem, which is the act of brutality they inflicted, they rather go the "extra" mile and try to block their users from seeing the truth. How stupid do they think people are? Obviously the video is not a fake. Sadly these occurrences happen more frequent than some people know. And not just in China.

This is what we can expect

This is what we can expect from a Socialist right? I mean the state-government controls everything so it's upto them, what do they do. I would have accepted that it's a technical problem IF there wasn't such a history behind China and the controversies. But China did host the Olympics very well and they set the standard really high apart from the other controversies which I didn't like myself

Small Difference

Not quite. First of all China is a Communist country not a socialist. Also, China and all those countries use the ideas of Marx to establish a totalitarian state.

Socialist countries include, France, Denmark, Sweden. Hmmm, somehow these countries do not seem to have may things in common to China.

I guess people like you tend to use the word 'Socialism' without really understanding anything.

What a joke it is that China

What a joke it is that China is claiming that something was amiss or "unplugged" as they called it. How can this happen to a technologically advanced Country? It is total non sense. There are many countries that like to talk the talk but not walk the walk. This is really no surprise when it comes to China.

I appreciate China's

I appreciate China's measures in protecting its people. These internet governance measures would work only for those who are unaware of the tricks of by-passing the internet. There are lot of proxies out there to easily by-pass the internet. Also the blocking / content filtering software would not work as expected as there are lot of loopholes in the technology. - Simon

are you serious?

Simon, that's crazy. You appreciate China's measures in protecting its people? Come on. That's not protection. That's full out communism and suppressiong of its people. Yes, lots of people could certainly bypass the system if wanted, but China is not doing their country any good with that kind of control.

Hi, Im living in China and,

Hi, Im living in China and, while Im upset about Youtube been blocked and everything, I dont agree with u at all... China has such amazing features in almost every fild, and even USA has a lot of troubles with human rights and control, just different kind, we cover the info or display a different interpretation of it... And about the Tibet, yeah, they should recover their freedom, but remenber also they used to treat a lot of people as slaves... Evidently different points of view, by the way, u can check out youku.com if u re in China, almost the same as youtube... some times even a lot better

DON"T AGREEE

Man your live in China, me too, but here is lots of problems. You comparing Youtube and Youku, you are crazy then. Youtube is like a world but youku is small island like hainan. So stop droping shits. In here there is no human rights. I'm not glad, everything is closed, the Chinese government doesn't want, Chinese ppl find out lots of things. Coz ppl of China see things from net, they wanna do things... so government try to control it. That is suck my chinese friends doesn't know lots of things...

Indeed, YouTube has been

Indeed, YouTube has been unavailable here since last night (Weds 17th) and RSS (well, mainly Feedburner) seems to be a new target too. And yet Blogspot is back, meaning that my own blog is (temporarily) back in from the cold. I never expected logic or reason, but it seems to be getting more and more random.

My Thoughts

China has a fascinating history and I would love to visit one day, but with information like this in hand it certainly makes me think twice about going there. Sad news indeed for the millions of their citizens that are being mislead there. I enjoyed reading your post and watched the video as well, disturbing, to say the least. Thanks for bringing it to our attention here.

great retort man.. I'm

great retort man.. I'm living in korea right now and have to say.. I was thinking about checking china out but after they blocked youtube to hell with them. I'll go to japan for a visit instead and have a vaction there..if I went to china, how am I gonna get my Rick astley video fix while I wait for my taxi in bejinng? what if I want to listen to a chocolate rain ventrillo harssament video?? I'd go crazy if I couldnt. China is akin to a big pathetically strong special olympics athlete.. sure he's able to do some monumentally powerful things but it still doens't make it an intellligent being.. but them blocking youtube in all its time-wasting glory still doenst boil my blood like saudi arabia.. saudi arabia now have a women's movement to boycott buying thongs and lingerie because only men can be salesmen.. HAH!! way to go ladies.. the stores dont even have changing rooms so a woman buying them doenst know if the stuff even fits..and some women are actaully against this movement of females in the workplace as lingerie salespeople fearing someone might take a picture of the women undressing (holy strawberryies batman, there in a jam!!!) write a retort about this new development.. i think you will get a kick out of it...

Great site for all u punk ass haters!!!!!

Great site for all u punk ass haters, so u can confirm one another how great ur own society are, easier to talk shit about other countries, than to deal with ur own shit, wake up all countries have problems in one or another way.

Thanx a lot

Thanx a lot for your nice words. We managed to piss you off. That means that we did our job well. Keep at it.

Indeed all countries have problems, including the US, many EU countries, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Israel etc etc. What is your point? That we should just shut the fak up about China? Sorry buddy, there's smth called democracy and freedom of speech.

It's in the Works

Thanks for the tip but our other favorite FAK Saudi Arabia is next on my WTF hit list. I don't think I'd be comfortable visiting China regardless of the good things I've heard about particular areas. I don't feel like living out the rest of my life in some hellhole prison because I happened to forget I wasn't in a democratic nation and opened my mouth. I know better than to think I can contain my opinions for any amount of time. There are particular places I can never go unless I was suffering from some incurable disease and wanted to end my life without the benefits of euthanasia. If I'm ever faced with such a dilemma, I'll just go visit a place like China or maybe Saudi Arabia where I'd be guaranteed a deathly stoning probably within the first few days of my arrival since I made the mistake of first being a woman(yeah, I'm not a man, sorry) and having an opinion I absolutely insist upon expressing.
