Greece: Birth Place of Democracy and Riots
As I am reading various Greek and international news regarding the current riots in Greece, I do not know what to feel. Surely, my feelings are mixed. There is a sense of shame, disgust, and exasperation, but also a sense of hidden pride.
For those who have missed what is going on in Greece, let me briefly filll you in. Last Saturday, a policeman shot and killed a 15 year old boy. The policeman claims that he fired in the air and the bullet ricocheted. The ballistic investigation is on-going. Some witnesses claim that the cop shot with the intention to kill the boy. This event's sparked massive protests and riots throughout the country. Banks, shops, and cars are burning. The situation is out of hand for the time being.
I do not know if the cop intended to kill but at the end it does not matter much. What matters is that a teenager is dead, the policeman’s life and that of his family are ruined since he has 3 kids under the age of 18, and the whole country has been tossed into mass disarray because of the riots.
Once again the police have failed to do their job not only by killing a kid but failing to protect the private property and safety of the Greek citizens as well. A bunch of extreme left-wing thugs together with looters are exploiting the shooting event as an excuse to wreak havoc. These events disgust me because these shit-for-brains morons do not honour the death of an innocent through their actions. I am also disgusted by the police, who have repeatedly killed and beaten people without a cause or punishment (according to EU) yet they fail to protect those in need.
For some reason, though, I feel a sense of pride for the huge number of young people who are peacefully protesting on the streets about the event. They are protesting because they know that nobody has the right to be above the law, including the police. But they are also protesting because they fear for their future and what the government is doing or not doing. They are fed up with the corruption of the current and past administrations. The killing was only the excuse for the young generation to shout ‘That is enough. We want to live in a prosperous society governed by responsible leaders not by thugs.’ If thugs (corrupt politicans) are in power and have immunity, then why not have thugs (teenaged anarchists) destroying private property?
Greece has always had a strong element of protest. The students helped to bring down the dictatorship in 1973. Since then, repeated governments have failed to provide a stable society and deliver on the promises they'd made. As D. Howden of the Independent wrote: 'There is every reason for anger and just as in 1973, the streets are burning – but this time there is no unifying cause and no visible route to redemption'. Successive governments of both the socialist and conservatives have failed miserably.
The whole system is in disarray, from the police to justice system to every part of the country. Fear, isolation, poverty and despair permeate every part of the society. If we fail the young generation, then we fail a country. This is what happened in Greece for many years, That is why I chose to leave a long time ago. But the youth had enough. Now it is their time, their revolution. I only hope they succeed.

ironic
riots and democracy shouldn't live in one house. that's going to be ironic.
Hope peace reigns
Whatever happened was very sad. By the time I write this here,I dont know what must have transpired all these months. But I hope the situation has returned to normalcy.
Police all over the world abuse their sense of power and I guess it happens everywhere. Every country need to have police reforms and make them accountable for whatever they do.
But that is certainly no reason to encounter a civil disturbance.
Hope peace has returned to Greece. Its a beautiful place with a rich legacy.
Greek Riots
I guess I was too busy with work to have heard about this. Or maybe it didn't receive much coverage where I live. Either way, it is a shame that it happened, and I hope that the investigation shows that it really was an accident. It is sad to think that any police officer would have shot the teenager on purpose.
Matter of great sorrow
I too feel pride for huge number of young people who are peacefully protesting on the streets about the event.but i think there is great need of courage and patience.
hehe
being in a riot in greece is a coming of age ritual, much like getting drunk at a kegger is in the us
i agree with you chris.
i agree with you chris.
Democracy and rebellion
I not too understand Greece's present, but Greece in the past once was the democratic place of origin, simultaneously is also riot's intently, I did not understand why these two completely opposite characteristics will manifest in this kind of nationality
Actually
Actually Democracy and Rebellion go hand in hand. I am sure that the French will agree with that. We get the government in power, we get them down.
Riots and violence are not welcome but these are caused by the minority. The system in Greece has to change.
As riots go on, Greece has to face political dilemmas
Demonstrations, even vicious ones, are not new in the country, which has an elongated practice of political remonstration and has been relatively lenient of the self-described revolutionary groups that usually stick to anti-government demonstrations.
Not that simple
I am afraid it is not as simple as you would like to portray it. Having so-called revolutionary groups or anarchist groups are good as long as they realise what these notions really mean.
I am afraid that both 'anarchists' and governments have simply lost the plot.

This is a great site. Why don't you update more often?
Thanks
Thanks a lot for your nice words. Both Antigone and I feel that we should update when we are 'on fire' about an issue rather than updating just for the sake of it. This is perhaps what is different from many other sites and that is why our stories tend to be rather lengthy.
I agree too, will be very
I agree too, will be very early a awakening of every american. But I trust this crisis will be end soon, anyway.
And America?
"Once again the police have failed to do their job not only by killing a kid but failing to protect the private property and safety of the Greek citizens as well."
I see this happen all the time here, and I don't see the protests and riots. What has happened to America? Are the youth that interested in their video games and TV shows that they can't go outside and *do something* about their government? I guess so.
U R sooooo right
I know what you mean. We too start to wonder about the American society. What has happened to the fire-within that Americans had about justice?
The problem is complicated. It starts in school and at home. I think that we are gradually seeing the 'studification' of the American youth who are only interested in burgers and video games.
Studification?
Up here in Canada we *almost* had a 'protest' regarding the political situation, but then... nothing happened. We really haven't seen a riot since we hosted the G8 summit a couple of years ago. Thinking about it, we've really never had anything to get completely upset about. The political crap that went on here a few weeks ago was NOTHING compared to what is going on in Greece. Maybe our stereotype fits us, we really are just boring and nice. Oh well. Thanks for the article.
It could be different
Well Canada is overall a nice country to live in. It is not ideal but it is much better than the US. Canada is trying to be somewhere in the middle between Europe and the US. It is not completely successful and there are some issues.
Indeed the charade with bringing Harper down (which I would personally love to see) is indeed nothing like what is going on in Greece. However, I wonder if Canadians would do what it takes should the situation demands it.
Thanks a lot for your nice comment.
I Do Agree
I do believe that there is an awakening of the American people. Not all of course, but most finally seem to be coming around after everything is falling down.
